I want a matter command center that our practice leads and attorneys open every morning to see where every open matter stands. Clio makes you click into matters one at a time to piece this together. This app is not about creating matters, it is the daily review surface for matters that already exist, so keep stale matters and upcoming deadlines front and center.

The main screen is a board of open matters grouped into columns by matter stage. Build the columns from Clio's List Matter Stages and place each matter in the column matching its current stage, using List Matters restricted to open matters. Give the board a clear empty state per column and keep column order stable so the layout does not jump between loads.

Each card shows the matter display number and description, the responsible attorney, the next upcoming deadline or court date, a count of open tasks, and the number of days since the last recorded activity. Pull the next deadline from List Calendar Entries for that matter, taking the earliest entry dated today or later. Pull the open task count from List Tasks filtered to tasks that are not complete. Derive days since last activity from List Activities, using the most recent activity date on the matter.

Flag any matter with no recorded activity in the last 14 days as stale, with a visually obvious badge on the card. Make that threshold a setting the user can change rather than a hard-coded 14, since practices differ on what counts as quiet. Stale matters should be easy to pick out when scanning the board quickly.

Default the board to the signed-in user's own matters. Resolve who that is with Get Current User and filter to matters where they are the responsible attorney, then offer a toggle to view the whole firm. The two filters that matter most day to day are practice area, populated from List Practice Areas, and responsible attorney, populated from List Users. Remember the user's filter and scope choices between visits so the board opens the way they left it.

Dragging a card into another column moves the matter to that stage with Update Matter. Update the card optimistically and roll it back with a visible error if the write fails.

From a card I can add a task with Create Task, tick an existing task off with Update Task, and book a court date or deadline with Create Calendar Entry. I can also send a client status update through Gmail's Send a Message. Assemble that draft from the matter's recent activity and upcoming dates, then show it to me in an editable form so I can adjust the wording and the recipient before anything sends.

Important implementation note: Clio responses return a minimal default field set, so every handler must pass the fields query param including nested associations, for example fields=id,display_number,matter_stage{id,name},responsible_attorney{id,name}. Without it the card data comes back empty. Clio index endpoints are cursor paginated and rate limited, so fetch the supporting data for the visible matters in batched list calls rather than one call per card, and page through with page_token where the result set is large.
